The “axis mundi” is a connection between heaven and earth, between the divine and the material. With this gravity-defying choreography, imagined and performed at the top of a mountain and on the verticality of a pole dance bar, I wanted to deliver my own vision of this “axis mundi.” Two bodies merge and evolve precisely between earth and sky, in a quest for physical and spiritual elevation along this invisible thread.

Aïpeur Foundou is a Congolese dancer and choreographer. Amidst some popular areas of Brazzaville, he shows us one possible way to freedom.

OF THE HEART is a tender and moving duet for the camera that slowly unfolds in a windblown field in late fall. The film speaks of longing and desire and is a richly metaphoric movement portrait. The performance by Dorfman and Race is heartfelt and honest, stripped to its emotional core.

The duet of two women dressed to go out – but who never do.

The sound of flour on skin, the echo of dripping water, the kneading of flesh. KNEAD is derived from intuition and with a wish to convey bodily experience, liberated from analysis and story-telling.

A sequence of improvised movement is translated into vector paths constructed using the application Motion.

The beauty of a ballerina in an art gallery is contrasted with threatening red lights, which indicate her pain in executing the movement.

The rain falls like so many tears on a young woman dressed in a little black dress. We dive into her eyes as we dive into her soul drowned by sorrow. At the bottom of the water, the woman, lying on the floor, gently up and begins to dance.

An unsupervised tribe of 75 children take over the entire city of New London, creating rites and rituals through street games. Their vibrant spirit evokes hopes for the future but also melancholy for the glorious past of children’s culture which is disappearing from the streets of American cities.

Blending an old time sermon with modern day Flex/Turf dance style, this film is based on the 1926 exhortation, “Death’s Black Train is Coming,” by the prolific black preacher, Rev. J.M. Gates, many of whose sermons were strong warnings of the hellish punishments that awaited sinners.

The Shadow Drone Project began by filming planned and unplanned events in civic and natural environments from an unmanned aerial vehicle. Shot in morning or late afternoon sunshine, the aerial viewpoint offers a unique cinematic perspective of dynamic patterning, where shadows of people and objects are sometimes revealed to be more present than their actual form. The film also deliberately identifies with the same viewpoint as surveillance techniques that cross legal and national borders, occupying the same downward gaze, but here set apart from its violent and military context.
