Given the times we’re living in, we’re delighted to once again be able to offer online screening options for those who may not want or be able to attend in-person events. These films will become available on this page during the screening window, free of charge for the public around the world.

As part of our efforts to move toward a more racially just and socially equitable landscape for dance cinema, SSF has celebrated heritage months for the last few years with screenings highlighting artists from communities underrepresented in the field, and from marginalized communities. These screenings have always been free of charge to our local community in Boulder, Colorado, USA, but since the pandemic began, we’ve taken them online to share with the wider dance cinema community. Sans Souci presents our 6th annual Women’s History Month Screening, celebrating and featuring the work of Women directors and extraordinary Women performers.

This film is made through a series of sequence shots of almost 10min, where the dancers appear and disappear in the field of the screen, where the DOP, 5th dance partner, is creating a choreography with them as well.

This short screendance work takes its title In Silence is the Offering Presented from a quote attributed to Chinese philosopher Confucius, which is instructive of peace over violence. Looking across the body of water, memories of homeland and feelings of displacement merge as the two main characters, mother and son, find themselves as refugees. Home, hope, dreams, safety, security, and love can be found in the silence. With choreography and direction by Li Chiao-Ping, cinematography, editing, and sound design by Christal Wagner, music by Byron Au Yong, and performance by Li Chiao-Ping and Jacob Li Dai-Loong Rosenberg, the evocative images in “in silence is the offering presented” reflect their experimental and collaborative approach to this expressive work.

Language and body language are the intricate threads that weave our identities. They unravel our stories, revealing the depths of our past and the essence of our being. The Way We… delves into this tapestry, unraveling not only our individual identities but also the legacies we carry forward. Through language, both spoken and unspoken, we inherit cultural nuances, values, and emotions. It’s not just communication; it’s a transmission of heritage and connection. Each word uttered, each gesture made, forms bridges between souls, carrying the weight of our experiences and the warmth of our shared humanity.

As our lives get mutated by different lands and cityscapes, what stays persistent? How do body memories get recycled / shared and where does the body-as-archive is practised to become a refuge to root ourselves during a migratory experience? The last film of the MDFP series draws from the corporeal memories of 10 dancers-singers who are engaged in a “movement through journeying process” of converging individual practices in a nomadic and rhythmic chorus of togetherness and home seeking/finding.
