two jazz film screenings give a sneak peek at our 20th season!
This season we’re offering a screening of our new selections from our exclusive Jazz Dance category, including films that explore jazz and American social dance ideas from forms including but not limited to tap and hip-hop styles. Crafted in collaboration with Rhythmically Speaking Dance and our friends at Boulder Jazz Dance Workshop, this selection encourages artists to join the ongoing conversation around ‘what constitutes jazz and American social dance,’ and the sociocultural histories of and innovations in these styles. Don’t miss your chance to see these films before anyone else, and catch a Q&A with presenting artists!

This film explores the history of jazz where black and white bodies illustrate the beauty of dance, origins of the communication of movement with classic lines, improvisation and social dance forms and the blurred lines between the forms. Music is the soul is for jazz movement, historically. At the core of this style is the rhythmic patterns that is emotionally felt in the body and we created a short film – Heartbeat – to illustrate cinematically the various forms and to respect the lineage of the African beat. Not only is it rooted in tap to reveal rhythmically the sophistication of jazz dance, there is a titillating look at the lines of jazz dance with the seamless lines of architecture of the historic urban building as well as the isolations of the male body vs female body along with the integration of races of the artists. It begins with the blurred grey lines of the history and then opens up to color to highlight the evolution, musicality and syncopation of the movement.
